In his first interview since the birth of the royal baby, Prince William spoke with CNN about fatherhood, seeming very much like any new dad as he talked about changing diapers, dealing with a baby that won’t sleep through the night and looking forward to returning to work, which he hopes will enable him to get some sleep.
William noted that he changed the first diaper, or “nappy” as the British call them, and that dealing with those is a frequent occurrence around the royal household.

William said of George, “He’s a little bit of a rascal, put it that way. So he either reminds me of my brother or me when I was younger. I’m not sure … He’s a little fighter. He kind of, he wriggles around quite a lot.”
George isn’t much of a sleeper, according to his father, leading William and Kate to get up often in the middle of the night.
William’s two-week paternity leave ended earlier this month, sending him back to his post with the British Air Force in Wales. In the interview, taped prior to his return, William said he’s looking forward to returning to his work as a search-and-rescue pilot so that he can get some sleep, a sentiment he said a few fathers might relate to.
As evidenced by his down-to-earth description of fatherhood, William said that despite being part of the British monarchy, he tries to remain as independent as possible, which is why he wanted to drive the car that took Catherine and George away from the hospital.

He also talked about the experience of showing off his son on the steps of the hospital, saying that he felt “shock and dauntingness,” but he and Catherine were also “on such a high” that they were happy to show off the new baby.
He added, “It’s not somewhere I enjoy being; I know that the position I’m in, that’s what’s required of me to do. And I think it’s, you know, it’s one of those things … It’s nice that people want to see George, so, you know — I’m just glad he wasn’t screaming his head off the whole way through.”
