The Producers Guild of America on Wednesday announced the opening of submissions and key deadlines for the 25th annual Producers Guild Awards, to be handed out Jan. 19 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Producers Guild national treasurer Lori McCreary (Invictus) and national board member Michael De Luca (Moneyball, The Social Network) will co-produce and co-chair the event.
As it did last year, the guild’s awards submission website – www.producersguildawards.com – will provide a fully digital interface for submission for its 12 competitive categories.
The PGA Awards can be crucial to the Oscar race. Last year, Argo‘s best picture Oscar odds looked shaky until its PGA win appeared to turn the tide. PGA also helped The King’s Speech nose ahead of precursor-prize hog The Social Network on the road to the Oscar, and did the same for The Hurt Locker, despite its rival Avatar‘s best drama and best director wins at the Golden Globes. Since 1990, the PGA Award has gone to the eventual Oscar winner 17 out of 24 times — a remarkable 71 percent correlation. In the past five years, every best picture Oscar went to the PGA winner (Slumdog Millionaire, The Hurt Locker, The King’s Speech, The Artist, and Argo).
In short, both in their own right and as a bellwether, the PGA Awards, as The Hollywood Reporter awards analyst Scott Feinberg observed (quoting Vice President Joe Biden), are “a big f*****g deal.”
