The Producers Guild of America has staked out Jan. 18, 2020, as the date for its 31st Annual Producers Guild Awards, while the Directors Guild of America has set its 72nd Annual DGA Awards for Jan. 25, 2020, and SAG-AFTRA has laid claim to Jan. 26, 2020, for its 26th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. The rush to nail down 2020 dates has become a game of musical chairs begins as the various guilds and awards groups book available slots in advance of the 2020 Academy Awards, which will take place on Feb. 9 of that year.
The PGA on Monday also announced that its 2020 awards dinner will take place at the Fairmont Century Plaza hotel, which is currently undergoing renovations.
The PGA is essentially claiming the same weekend it has occupied under the present awards schedule. Its 30th PGA Awards are set to take place on Jan. 19, 2019, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Similarly, the SAG Awards has set down on a 2020 date comparable to the one it is using this upcoming awards season, when the 25th Annual SAG Awards will be held on Jan. 27, 2019, and broadcast live on TNT and TBS.
On Tuesday, the DGA also weighed in by laying down a marker for Jan. 25, 2020. The guild’s upcoming 71st Annual DGA Awards will first take place on Feb. 2, 2019, at Hollywood & Highland’s Ray Dolby Ballroom.
The Academy’s recent announcement that it is moving its 2020 Oscars up from its traditional berth near the end of February to Feb. 9 is going to put pressure on other awards ceremonies to find available slots before the Oscars take place. The BAFTA Awards, for example, which have traditionally been held two weeks ahead of the Oscars, are looking to move up their ceremony in 2020.
Aug. 28, 12:20 p.m. Updated to include DGA Awards’ 2020 date.
