LONDON — A new puppet show from The Muppets creators has been commissioned by the BBC.
BBC’s In-House Entertainment division and The Jim Henson Company have inked a deal to bring viewers a Saturday night show claiming to be “like no other,” called That Puppet Game Show.
Each week two celebrities will be plunged into That Puppet Game Show – “a unique world of puppet comedy and madcap games,” the BBC said.
As the only humans who appear on the show, the celebrity contestants will go head to head in a number of games, each hoping to win $16,000 (£10,000) for their chosen charity.
Dougie Colon will host the show with each of the individual games run and hosted by a different freshly created puppet character, who is an expert in their field.
In a unique twist, That Puppet Game Show is the first game show to also include a backstage sitcom featuring all the puppet characters onstage and more, like the producer Mancie and the bullish show executive, Udders McGhee.
Celebrities lined up to take part in the show include BBC sports presenting stalwart Gary Lineker, Strictly Come Dancing presenting team regulars Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly, game show host Vernon Kay and Welsh opera star Katherine Jenkins, as well as cricket star-turned-TV regular Freddie Flintoff.
Filming is currently under way and That Puppet Game Show will debut on BBC One later in the year.
The show is an eight x 45-minute season co-production between BBC In-House Entertainment and The Jim Henson Company.
The executive producers are Derek McLean for the BBC and Brian Henson for The Jim Henson Company.
Martin Baker from puppet experts Baker Coogan will also serve as executive producer.
The series producer is Jamie Ormerod.
