Russian protest band Pussy Riot members Nadezhda Tolokonnikova (Nadya) and Maria Alyokhina (Masha), both of whom were arrested and charged with hooliganism in March of 2012 after staging a protest performance against Vladimir Putin in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior, will appear at a panel discussion this Monday, April 7, in Los Angeles.
The event will take place at the Mack Sennett Studios, at 1215 Bartes Avenue on the corner of Fountain and Bates at 10 p.m. A suggested donation of $25 will go to Voice Project, a non-profit organization with the stated mission “to utilize the power of music to effect positive social change, alleviate suffering and promote human rights around the globe.”
Voice Project’s Hunter Heaney and Chris Holmes will moderate the discussion. Among the musicians who have contributed to Voice Project are Mike Mills, Billy Bragg, Joanna Newsom, Blake Mills, Lucinda Williams, Dawes, Joseph Arthur, Peter Gabriel, Tom Waits, Citizen Cope, Steel Train, La Roux, Broken Bells, Nicole Atkins and Broken Social Scene, among others.
Panel members include MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer, KCRW’s Anne Litt, poster provocateur Shepard Fairey and Pyotr Verzilov of Voina, the political performance art group cohorts of Pussy Riot.

The band was the subject of the HBO documentary Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer, which was also shown at the 2013 Sundance film festival and on the BBC.
Both Nadya and Masha participated in the February 6 Amnesty International concert at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, where they were introduced by Madonna.
