Queens of the Stone Age will release their first new album in nearly six years in June. The disc, titled …Like Clockwork, will be released via Matador, where the band recently signed after leaving Interscope. The news emerged last week after QOTSA posted what appeared to be new album art along with terse snippets of new material on its website. A Matador logo was also revealed on the site.
The new album, a follow-up to 2007’s Era Vulgaris, will feature guest appearances by Trent Reznor, Elton John and Scissor Sisters’ frontman Jake Shears. The band confirmed in November that Dave Grohl recorded drums for the album, replacing drummer Joey Castillo. The record also marks the return of two original QOTSA musicians. Former bassist Nick Oliveri, who has been involved in some serious legal issues as of late, and Mark Lanegan, who has focused on his solo career in recent years, will appear on the album.
Little else is known about the upcoming record, although the band has been sending cryptic notes to media outlets over the past several months. QOTSA has mailed mysterious letters to U.K. publications NME, Kerrang! and Mojo, which have included imagery of clocks and the recurring use of the number nine.
“On this record we came to a realization: The best trick of all, is not trick at all,” the band wrote in the letter to Kerrang! “The songs are a real time document of the manic ups and downs of the last year. It can’t always run like clockwork. So rather than control the direction of the recordings, we decided to ride shotgun on our emotional bandwagon. We embraced our evil, held the horrible, licked the lunacy and blew the beautiful. As a result, we’re on Cloud 9.”
…Like Clockwork will be QOTSA’s sixth album and first for Matador. If you refresh the band’s website several different snippets of new material can be heard.
