TORONTO – The young man fatally crushed by a massive Toronto stage collapse on Saturday has been identified as Scott Johnson, a drum technician for the British rock band Radiohead.
A Radiohead spokesperson confirmed the identity of Johnson, 33 years, from Doncaster, England, to the Toronto Star newspaper.
Johnson sustained a “crushing injury” when the Toronto stage collapsed while he and other Radiohead crew members were setting up for a Saturday night concert, Toronto police said earlier on Saturday.
Three other crew members were injured due to the mishap, and one ended up in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Fellow musicians were quick to pay tribute to Johnson on news of his death.
“A very talented man and a lovely guy all round. Glad to have known him. A big loss. RIP Scott,” Jack Lawrence Brown, drummer with White Lies, said on his Twitter account Sunday.
“Our thoughts are with the family of Scott Johnson – the drum tech for Radiohead who tragically died yesterday,” Charlatans lead singer Tim Burgess added on his Twitter account.
Johnson worked with a number of other rock bands, including Keane and an Australian Pink Floyd tribute band.
“Shocking to hear the passing of crew member Scott Johnson of the radiohead tour – my thoughts and condolences are with everyone involved,” Geoff Barrow, instrumentalist with the British band Portishead, said on his Twitter account.
