Ralph Fiennes to Receive European Achievement in World Cinema Honor

British actor Ralph Fiennes, the star of The Grand Budapest Hotel and The English Patient, the man who played Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter franchise and “M” in James Bond films Skyfall and Spectre, will be honored with this year’s European Achievement in World Cinema award at the 2018 European Film Awards.

Fiennes had his international breakthrough playing Nazi psychopath Amon Goeth in Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List in 1993, a role that won him a BAFTA and earned him an Oscar nomination as best supporting actor. His starring performance as the scarred pilot in Anthony Minghella’s The English Patient (1996) earned him a second Oscar nom, this time in the best actor category.

In addition to roles in Hollywood features, including Robert Redford’s Quiz Show and Kathryn Bigelow’s Strange Days and The Hurt Locker, Fiennes has stayed true to European cinema, both in front of and behind the camera. He earned a European Film Award for best actor for his role in Istvan Szabo’s Sunshine in 1999 and received critical acclaim for his performance in A Bigger Splash, the 2015 drama from Italian director Luca Guadagnino.

Fiennes made his directorial debut in 2011 with the Shakespeare adaptation Coriolanus, using money earned from his Harry Potter films to complete financing. He received his fifth BAFTA nomination for his performance in the film’s titular role. His sixth, along with his fourth Golden Globe nomination, came from his turn as the concierge M. Gustave in Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014).

As a director, Fiennes has followed up with The Invisible Woman in 2013 and The White Crow this year.

Ralph Fiennes will receive the European Achievement in World Cinema award at the 31st European Film Awards Ceremony in Seville on Dec. 15.
