When Real Housewives of New Jersey returns July 13 for its sixth season on Bravo, the show will be quite different from what viewers are used to. For starters, a number of last season’s ladies have left, while three new women — Amber Marchese and twins Teresa Aprea and Nicole Napolitano — are joining the fun.
Luckily, one point of stability is returning cast member Melissa Gorga, who will again let viewers see the dynamics of her marriage to Joe and her up-and-down relationship with sister-in-law Teresa Giudice. In anticipation of the new season, Melissa tells THR how she and Teresa Giudice are doing at the moment, which new cast member Melissa doesn’t trust and what viewers can expect in the forthcoming season (hint: hair-pulling!).
You have fought with Teresa [Giudice] in the past, but it appears that you two have now patched things up this season. Is that the case?
Yeah, of course — that’s definitely the case. I feel like I don’t want to fight anymore. I think we’ve agreed to disagree on certain things, and at the end of the day, we’re a family, and there’s a bigger picture going on obviously in her life. I live a happy life with my husband and my kids, and there’s no reason to fight anymore. I think right now, she needs family, and it’s a time for family to back her up, and her brother and I are here for her.
Have you talked to her recently? Do you know how she’s handling her legal issues?
She’s doing good. She’s doing what any mother would do, which is just focus on her family, focus on what she needs to focus on, and then that’s it. I don’t like to comment too much on her legal issues because it’s a personal thing, and it’s confusing, and a lot of us don’t know or understand exactly what’s going on. But we’re just here to support her, and if she needs us, we’re here.
It seems as though you and Amber will be butting heads this season.
When I found out she was casted on the show, I reached out to her. I said, ‘Welcome aboard, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.’ I don’t know — it’s kind of hard to tell what her intentions are for coming back into my life and for coming around. I wanted to believe she just wants to re-find our friendship and rebuild our friendship. But she does a couple things that make me wonder what her intentions are and if she has good intentions or if she’s coming back around for other reasons. I know in the preview, I guess she said she graduated college to be successful and that I married Joe — it’s annoying to me because I also graduated college when I met Joe. So just little things like that that make you wonder, is it genuine, or did she come back around for other reasons?
You and Joe have always been open with viewers about what you go through in your marriage. What can we expect between you two this season?
Joe and I have always been pretty much an open book, so you’re going to see more of that. We go through our ups and downs like any couple; we try to keep it very real on the show. And anyone who meets us in person says that we’re exactly who we are on TV, and it’s true. We don’t put up a front for the cameras, and we just remain true to who we are. We put our family first.
How did you feel about response to your book [2013’s Love Italian Style]? Would you consider writing another one?
I would never say that I wouldn’t write another book. I don’t know exactly what the topic would be. Right now, I’m just concentrating on my HSN jewelry line [called The Melissa Gorga Collection] that comes out July 28. But as far as the book goes, I strongly believe in everything I wrote in the book. I think it is more of an old-school approach, and it doesn’t work for a lot of modern-day women, but I also think that’s why there’s a lot more problems with marriages nowadays. I stand by what I say [in the book] when I think that the old-school, traditional ways of husband-and-wife work best for the family, for the kids.
What else can you tease us about the new season’s drama?
There’s some hair-pulling! There’s arguments, there’s a lot of laughs. I definitely think the new girls came ready to go. I think the viewers are going to love watching all of this unexpected stuff.
Real Housewives of New Jersey‘s sixth season premieres Sunday, July 13, at 8 p.m. on Bravo.
