Rebecca Black Drops Out of School Due to Bullying

Rebecca Black was forced to drop out of school because of bullying related to her music video for “Friday,” she told ABC News’ Nightline.

The video went viral after it was posted on YouTube in the spring and a popular comedy site picked up on it.

“After seeing it go from 4,000 views to 70,000 views in one night, and then waking up and it was at 200,000 views, that was when I realized this is going to be big,” Black said.

But along with the attention came a lot of negative reaction to the song, which relies heavily on auto-tuning, spurring many to question whether the 14-year-old could actually sing. Viewers posted such comments as “You suck at singing” and “I hope you go to die.” (The song has since been pulled from YouTube over a copyright dispute with Ark Music Factory, the company Black’s parents paid $4,000 to produce the song and video.)

And Black also was harassed at school by her classmates.

“When I walk by they’ll start singing ‘Friday’ in a really nasally voice,” she said. “Or, you know, they’ll be like, ‘Oh hey, Rebecca, guess what day it is?'”

As a result, Black asked her mother, Georgina Marquez, if she could be home-schooled instead. Marquez agreed, saying it would be a good opportunity for Black to focus on her career.

“She certainly did not need that kind of pressure,” said Marquez, a teacher now home-schooling her daughter.

But Black is seeing the positive from all the attention.

In addition to “Friday” being featured on an episode of Fox’s hit Glee, she has since gone on to release another video for her latest single, “My Moment.”

She also appeared in Katy Perry’s video for “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” and won the Teen Choice Award for Choice Web Star at Sunday’s show.

And “Friday” has earned her a lot of money. While she claims she doesn’t know how much she has made off the song, she admits that it will be enough to cover her college tuition.
