Jennifer Lawrence’s upcoming spy thriller isn’t going to be for the faint-hearted.
At the unveiling of new footage of Red Sparrow, which sees the actress play a former ballerina-turned-Russian-seductress/spy, the director highlighted the adult nature of the material.
“It’s definitely R,” Francis Lawrence revealed at a special Fox event held in London on Friday. “When I read the book and I made the pitch to the studio about what the approach would be, this was a definite R. Nobody’s chickened out or got cold feet, everybody’s gone for it from the beginning. It’s a hard R.”
The film, which also stars Joel Edgerton, Jeremy Irons, Matthias Schoenaerts, Mary-Louise Parker and Charlotte Rampling, sees Lawrence reunited with her Hunger Games director, and is heavy on sex, with the Oscar-winning actress’ character trained to seduce individuals deemed enemies of the Russian state.
And working together before definitely helped on set, claimed the filmmaker.
“I think she was willing to take some risks in this movie, she might not have been willing to do for somebody she didn’t know,” he said. “I definitely think we have a shorthand — we have plenty of shoot days under our belt now so we know how to communicate really efficiently. And it works.”
Lawrence also revealed that there was just one week’s worth of shooting left to do, with production taking place across Europe and now in London. Red Sparrow is due for release in March 2018.
