Reese Witherspoon smiled for the cameras but didn’t stop to answer questions during Sunday’s Mud premiere — and perhaps with good reason.
The red carpet at the Museum of Modern Art in New York took place shortly after news broke that the actress had been arrested in Atlanta over the weekend. Witherspoon was taken into custody Friday morning for disorderly conduct after police stopped her husband, CAA agent Jim Toth, on suspicion of DUI.

Witherspoon’s Mud co-stars Matthew McConaughey, Sarah Paulson and director Jeff Nichols also attended the premiere and spoke to journalists on the carpet.
On Sunday, mugshots of Witherspoon and Toth were released online, after which Witherspoon issued a statement in which she said she “had one to many drinks” the night of her arrest and was “deeply embarrassed.”
Read her statement below:
“Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now. But I do want to say, I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I’m very sorry for my behavior.”
