Relativity Media is replacing its head of marketing. A source close to the studio confirms that Terry Curtin is leaving and will be replaced by the team of Russell Schwartz and Dana Precious.
Schwartz, whose title will be president of theatrical marketing, is the former head of marketing for New Line Cinema who is currently a Relativity consultant. Precious, whose title will be president of creative advertising and research, was formerly executive vp worldwide marketing for Marvel Studios. She has held top marketing jobs at Fox and Sony.
The move comes as Relativity suffered a major flop this weekend with Paranoia, a $35 million-budgeted Liam Hemsworth/Harrison Ford thriller that opened to just $3.5 million. Relativity marketed and distributed the film, which was produced and financed by IM Global, Demarest and Reliance.
Both Schwartz and Precious will report to Relativity president Tucker Tooley.
They will jointly oversee all aspects of marketing for Relativity’s film slate, which currently includes Luc Besson‘s action comedy The Family, Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s directorial debut Don Jon, Jimmy Hayward‘s animated buddy comedy Free Birds and Scott Cooper‘s Out of the Furnace.
Curtin is said to be leaving the studio to pursue other opportunities, but further details weren’t immediately clear.
As former president of theatrical marketing at New Line Cinema, Schwartz managed and created marketing campaigns for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Hairspray, Wedding Crashers, Elf, Rush Hour 2 and 3 and other movies. Prior to working at New Line, he was president of USA Films.
At Marvel, Precious oversaw marketing campaigns for Thor and Captain America, among other films.
Before Marvel, she was executive vp theatrical marketing at Fox and executive vp domestic theatrical marketing at Sony. She worked on such franchises as The Avengers, Spider-Man and Men in Black. Most recently, she worked as executive vp creative advertising and brand marketing at The Cimarron Group.
