The story of Relativity 2.0 just took a new twist.
Co-president of production Adam Fields has been ousted from the company that emerged from bankruptcy back in April.
Fields, who has only been on the job for less than five months, was terminated for what the company called breach of contract, sources said. It is unclear what the alleged breach was, but Fields was given a letter of termination on Sept. 8.
Relativity did not return a call for comment. Fields could not be reached for comment.
The move comes as Relativity tries to rebuild its image after a bruising bankruptcy process that saw the company’s financials exposed in public court records. But chairman and CEO Ryan Kavanaugh surprised many when he came out of bankruptcy with most of the studio’s film assets largely intact.
But as the company tried to rebuild, Fields’ hire back in April had been met with skepticism given Relativity’s need to hit the ground running post-bankruptcy. Fields was a producer prior to making the move to Relativity but hadn’t produced a hit movie since 2001’s Donnie Darko, which was, in fact, a box-office disappointment that later gained cult status after its theatrical life.
By contrast, Relativity had already enlisted producer Dana Brunetti — an Oscar nominee for such films as The Social Network and Captain Phillips — to its executive ranks.
It is unclear if Relativity will hire a new executive to serve in the same post as Fields.
