Iranian director Reza Mirkarimi on Thursday picked up the Golden George Award for best film for The Daughter during the gala closing ceremony of the 38th edition of the Moscow International Film Festival. The family drama’s Farhad Aslani also won best actor honors.
British filmmaker Stephen Frears received an award for outstanding contribution to world cinema, an honor the festival also bestowed on Spanish writer, director, actor and producer Carlos Saura and veteran Russian helmer Sergey Solovyov, whose new film Wild Pigeon also had been in competition, though it failed to pick up any prizes.
A special jury prize also was awarded to Bulgarian director Radoslav Spassov for The Singing Shoes, while Danish helmer Puk Grasten picked up best director honors for the Denmark-U.S. co-production 37.
