After last week’s Saint Laurent runway show — during which Anthony Vaccarello debuted his second collection for the French fashion house since taking the reins from the prolific Hedi Slimane — there was one piece that had the fashion world buzzing: A pair of glittering, disco ball-esque slouchy boots.
Samantha McMillen, who works with the Fanning sisters, and Ilaria Urbinati, whose clients include Ryan Reynolds and Nina Dobrev, were among the celebrity stylists to post a photo of the flashy kicks on Instagram immediately following the show — as did fashion force, Rihanna.
But RiRi, being RiRi, didn’t stop with mere social media fandom. Hours later, the popstar posted a photo of herself actually wearing the boots (styled with destroyed denim and a leather jacket) while out and about. She captioned the look: “Phresh out da runway. I [heart] YSL.”
The singer turned designer, who is currently in Paris to present her third Fenty x Puma collection this afternoon, added a second image of her look, which featured no shortage of sparklers.
This is hardly the first time Rihanna has leveraged her celebrity to be able to wear off-the-runway pieces. Just last week, she arrived at Harvard to accept her humanitarian award wearing an ensemble fresh from the Monse fall collection, which was shown in New York last month. (Sometimes, she even wears pieces before they hit the runway — as was the case when she arrived at the Dior show in a black beret, which was subsequently seen on every one of Maria Grazia Chiuri’s navy blue-clad models.)
And while it’s not uncommon for A-listers to forgo the typical six-month wait time imposed on consumers (remember, YSL does not operate on the see-now, buy-now model), the fact that Rihanna chose to wear the kicks while traipsing across Paris, as opposed to a red carpet, which is typically a caveat of the gifting trade, just cements her already established status as fashion’s leading lady.
Though it received a lukewarm reception from critics, Vaccarello’s second YSL collection may have found its saving grace in the disco ball boot.
