The man behind many of Rihanna‘s most risque looks showed some restraint when it came to the beauty look for his spring/summer 2015 runway show on Friday. Instead of a super-glam bombshell like his pop star client, Adam Selman and his team used Jane Birkin as a reference, from the slightly messy locks to the slightly mod makeup and natural skin.
Key to that look? Freckles. Which most of the models’ milky complexions don’t have. So makeup artist Maki Ryoke created them, using Erno Laszlo skincare and then Too Faced cosmetics for beauty.com.
“Adam’s inspiration was the ’60s and a young, modern girl with a healthy summer look that has some playfulness to it but is still sexy,” says Ryoke. “We came up with the fake freckles and fake bottom lashes with dewy skin to keep a modernness to it so it’s not too retro.”
After using a bit of Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm and Absolutely Flawless Concealer, she created the mod bottom lashes using the Too Faced 3 Way Lash Lining Tool — dotting it below the lower lash line in short strokes, a bit longer toward the outer eye. The artist added just a bit of mascara to the top lashes only, again to keep it light and youthful.
Then, the piece de resistance: those adorable freckles. Ryoke used a thin brush dipped in Too Faced Bulletproof Brows 24-hour Waterproof Cashmere Clay and, starting at the bridge of the nose, dotted on the spots one by one. “It’s a waterproof formula so you won’t see through it and they won’t move,” she says. “Just draw them one by one, tiny, and it looks like a real freckle. It’s really fun.” We’ve got to agree.
