Daily Olympian: Michael Phelps Finishes His Olympic Career With Gold Medal No. 23

The second week of the Olympics kicked off with Michael Phelps winning gold medal No. 23, more shade thrown in the war of words and Puerto Rico won its first ever gold. 

What happened yesterday

Elvis has left the building
Michael Phelps concluded his Olympic career (for now) with his 23rd Olympic gold medal, swimming the butterfly leg in the medley relay. It has been a good Games for Phelps: He became the most decorated Olympic athlete ever; he broke a 2,000-year-old record; and his baby is cute (named Boomer, no less!). 

1,000 Gold
The United States became the first nation to win a 1,000 gold medals in total in the Olympics.

These ladies are awesome
The women’s sabre team won the bronze medal. You should love this team: One is the most decorated American Olympic fencer ever; one is the first American athlete to compete in a hijab at the Olympics; and one has purple hair.

A first for Puerto Rico
Monica Puig won the women’s tennis singles title, earning Puerto Rico, which competes as an independent country in the Games, its first Olympic medal ever (anthem: “La Borinquena”). It was a big upset. Puig had only beaten one Top 10 player in her career (and none this year), but on the way to the gold she beat two.

Cold War, Part II: All pile on Lilly
Swimmer Yulia Efimova blasted Lilly King for criticizing her team in the swimming competition. Justin Gatlin threw shade on King for her earlier comments as well.

Elsewhere
British runner Mo Farah stumbled but still won gold. An upset in the women’s 100-meter sprint denied Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce bid to become the first woman to win a track gold in three consecutive Olympics. 

What’s on TV today

Primetime
Gymnastics individual event finals in men’s floor and pommel horse and women’s vault and uneven bars. On the track, watch the men’s 400-meter race, women’s triple jump and — hello Usain Bolt — the men’s 100-meter sprint. 

Daytime
The highlight of the day is men’s basketball vs. France at 1 p.m. ET. Plus, at 3:45 p.m. on MSNBC there’s the men’s table tennis final.
