NBC’s coverage of the Rio Olympics came under more fire Tuesday on Twitter after commentators failed to point out or even acknowledge the relationship between British diver Tom Daley and Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black during the men’s diving competition on Monday.
Twitter users were quick to point out that NBC was usually overly keen to push human interest stories during the Games but seemingly failed to acknowledge the relationship between Daley and his fiance Black even after the cameras lingered on the former’s entourage during the competition.
The Slate and The Advocate both took the network to task for its failure to mention the Black-Daley relationship, linking it to other gaffes and missteps by the broadcaster. A spokesperson for NBC played down the controversy and told The Advocate, “With more than 11,000 athletes at the Games, it isn’t always possible to identify every competitor’s significant other, regardless of their sexual orientation.”
Black, who won an Oscar for Milk, has been ever-present by Daley’s side in and out of competition in Rio and took to Twitter to congratulate his partner on his bronze medal.

Don’t think I haven’t noticed that NBC commentators have yet to acknowledge Tom Daley’s coming out or his fiancé even when he’s on camera

@LoloInMN Unless they’re gay. Tom Daley’s Oscar-winning fiancé was in the stands, they showed him for half a second, and NBC stayed mum.

Apropos of last tweet, I too noticed NBC showed Dustin Lance Black in the stands but didn’t mention his relation (fiance) to Tom Daley.
