Amazon said Friday that the third season of drama Ripper Street will premiere on its U.K. streaming service Amazon Prime Instant Video in mid-November.
The eight-episode season will air on BBC One in the U.K. and BBC America in the U.S. in 2015. Full timing details weren’t immediately disclosed. A spokesman said there were currently no plans for the show to become available on Amazon Prime Instant Video in the U.S.
The show, whose first season was set just after the Jack the Ripper murders, stars Matthew Macfadyen as Detective Inspector Reid, Jerome Flynn as the newly promoted Detective Inspector Bennet Drake, Adam Rothenberg as Captain Homer Jackson and MyAnna Buring as Long Susan.
Amazon and the BBC previously teamed up to bring back the show from producers Tiger Aspect Productions and Lookout Point, after the BBC canceled it citing weak ratings. Legions of Ripper Street fans had petitioned for its return. The series is co-produced in the U.S. by BBC America.
The first and second episodes of the new season will become available for Amazon Prime Instant Video subscribers at 9 p.m. on Nov. 14 with a further six episodes to be released weekly at 9 p.m. every Friday. The season finale will be released on Dec. 26.
Episodes of Ripper Street‘s third season on Amazon Prime Instant Video will include scenes that will not be shown in the BBC TV version.
“In its design, [season three] of Ripper Street was always meant to be our most ambitious yet, and we are delighted that Amazon has given us the creative freedom to make good on that ambition,” said the show’s creator and writer Richard Warlow. “With no restrictions on either the content or the length of each episode, we have been able to reassemble our magnificent cast and pitch them into a suite of stories which we hope will delight the millions of fans.”
Filming took place over the summer in Manchester, Loughborough and Dublin.
The third season picks up in 1894, four years after the culmination of season two, years in which Reid, Drake, Jackson and Long Susan have been split and divided by past events. “The violent heist of a goods train sets off a cataclysmic chain reaction that is to return them to each other’s side, before spiraling uncontrollably toward a conclusion that will leave them changed forever,” Amazon said in a show description.
Said Macfayden: “Thank you to Amazon, thank you to our fans who wanted more, and thank you to our wonderful writers and producers for giving us the most thoroughly brilliant, gripping and heart-rending opening episodes.”
