Michael Wilhoite for Café CarlyleCasting is almost complete on Larry David‘s upcoming Broadway debut as playwright and star, Fish in the Dark, with Rita Wilson, Ben Shenkman and Marylouise Burke among those joining the populous ensemble.
Anna D. Shapiro, a Tony winner for August: Osage County, who is currently represented on Broadway with her production of Kenneth Lonergan‘s This Is Our Youth, directs David’s comedy about a death in the family. The production begins previews Feb. 2 at the Cort Theatre, with official opening night set for March 5.
Also joining the cast is Lewis J. Stadlen, Tony-nominated in 1974 for Candide and in 1996 for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, along with Jenn Lyon and Molly Ranson. Previously announced names appearing with David in the world-premiere play are Rosie Perez, two-time Tony-nominee Jayne Houdyshell, Jonny Orsini, Jake Cannavale and Jerry Adler. Casting on a handful of other roles is still to be confirmed.

Wilson previously appeared on Broadway in a two-month stint in 2006 as Roxie Hart in the long-running Chicago revival. In September, she made her New York cabaret debut, showcasing her work as a singer-songwriter at the Cafe Carlyle (pictured above).
Shenkman’s last Broadway turn was opposite Laura Linney in the play Sight Unseen in 2004. He scored a Tony nomination in 2001 for Proof. Stage, television and film veteran Burke’s most recent Broadway role was in 2007 in the Mark Twain farce Is He Dead? She also played Jack’s mother in the 2002 revival of Into the Woods.
Best known as the co-creator, head writer and executive producer of Seinfeld and the creator and star of Curb Your Enthusiasm, David most recently co-wrote and starred in the HBO original film Clear History.
Lead producer on Fish in the Dark is Scott Rudin, whose prolific slate on Broadway this season includes This Is Our Youth, with Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin and Tavi Gevinson; Edward Albee‘s A Delicate Balance, with Glenn Close, John Lithgow and Lindsay Duncan; and the transfer of a London revival of David Hare‘s Skylight, starring Carey Mulligan and Bill Nighy, which starts performances March 16.
