Nearly six months after taking leave from Good Morning America to fight a rare bone marrow and blood disorder, Robin Roberts is officially headed back to work.
The co-anchor, who helped the ABC morning show topple the long supremacy of NBC’s Today Show, announced on Thursday that she would be returning to GMA on February 20, following successful treatment for myelodysplastic syndrome and a series of practice runs to test her strength and immune system.

“I’m excited to re-join my wonderful GMA family. I’m also looking forward to thanking YOU for your many prayers and well wishes,” Roberts wrote in a letter published online. “Your compassion has been an enormous source of comfort to me and my family. I’m heading to the beach for the next week to reflect and give thanks for my many blessings.”
Roberts’ journey, which included a bone marrow transplant from her sister and isolation to rebuild an immune system ravaged by the treatment, has been chronicled extensively on ABC, with periodic updates and satellite appearances to keep viewers up to date on her condition. She left the show at the end of August to battle the disease, which came as a result of her successful treatment for breast cancer.
Since leaving the show, her seat has been filled by a plethora of high-profile guest hosts, including Oprah Winfrey, Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric, Barbara Walters, Chris Rock, Kelly Ripa and Elizabeth Vargas.
