Robin Williams is being mourned by his colleagues and admirers, who are taking to social media to pay tribute to the versatile actor. The Oscar winner died of a suspected suicide Monday. He was 63.
Williams’ publicist Mara Buxbaum told The Hollywood Reporter: “Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.”
President Barack Obama remembered Williams this way, saying in a statement: “He arrived in our lives as an alien — but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit.”
Matt Damon later released the following statement about his Good Will Hunting co-star: “Robin brought so much joy into my life and I will carry that joy with me forever. He was such a beautiful man. I was lucky to know him and I will never, ever forget him. I truly hope the people in the media can find it within themselves to give his family some privacy during this horrible time.”
Aladdin composer Alan Menken also shared a statement: “If I had only watched Robin Williams on the TV screen, in the movies or on stage, I would consider myself blessed for having simply experienced his brilliance, his joy, his humor and his heart. The fact that I had the honor of sharing the creative process with him is an honor and a privilege that I will cherish for the rest of my life.”
