The film retells the story of John’s life, ranging in topics from his experience studying at the Royal Academy of Music to his struggles with international fame and drug addiction. John serves as an executive producer, while his husband David Furnish also produced the film.
Taron Egerton stars as John, while Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, Bryce Dallas Howard and Gemma Jones round out the cast. Dexter Fletcher, who stepped in to finish directorial duties on the upcoming Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody after helmer Bryan Singer was fired from that film, serves as Rocketman‘s director.
The trailer opens with scenes that offer glimpses into John’s career, including him onstage and recording a new song. “There are moments in a rock star’s life that define who he is,” Egerton’s John says in a voiceover as the opening notes of “Bennie and the Jets” play. “Where there was darkness, there is no you. And it’s going to be a wild ride.”
John is then seen performing “Rocket Man” for a crowd before a montage of clips follow that show him flying on a private jet, recording in the studio, drinking alone and wearing eccentric costumes.
The teaser trailer concludes with John’s legs floating into the air while he plays the piano for an audience. The text “Based on a true fantasy” appears as the trailer ends.
The release of the trailer comes just days after Paramount Pictures released an image of Egerton in character as John. In the photo, John appears to be sitting in a private jet while wearing a gold lamé jacket over a black tank top. His outfit is pulled together with a gold chain and winged shoes with striped athletic socks.
Rocketman will debut in theaters on May 31, 2019. Watch the full teaser trailer above.
