Rodarte, the L.A. high-fashion darling favored by the likes of Natalie Portman, Rooney Mara and both Fanning sisters, on Wednsday will release a short fantasy-inspired film starring Elijah Wood, supermodel Guinevere van Seenus and 18 year-old Hedi Slimane muse Sidney Williams. To helm the 12-minute project, designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy again tapped L.A.-based photographer and commercial director Todd Cole, who worked with the siblings on their last two forays into fashion film in 2010 and 2011.
The short, called This Must Be the Only Fantasy, highlights the label’s summer 2013 collection of medieval-inspired chain-mail and corset-infused wares and, according to a statement, centers around a “mystical journey complete with a nefarious cloaked horseman, young hooligans who are not who they appear to be and a white unicorn.”
Wood, who plays Trevor (“a regal character clouded in mystery”), is a personal friend of the Pasadena-bred Mulleavy duo and can frequently be found sitting in the front row at their New York Fashion Week presentations, traipsing through LAX in their clothes and even attending game nights with the sisters in L.A.’s Silver Lake neighborhood.
Since launching in 2005, Rodarte has made three fashion shorts, each highlighting a summer collection and each with a rather high-profile yet artsy spin: 2011’s The Curve of Forgotten Things starred Elle Fanning, while 2010’s Aanteni was shown in theaters before Black Swan, for which the duo designed Portman’s costumes.
The film premieres at the end of July on The Creators Project, a digital culture-based video initiative founded by Vice and Intel in 2010.
