TORONTO — Roger Ebert‘s 2011 memoir Life Itself is getting the big-screen treatment in a project that will unite Martin Scorsese, Steven Zaillian and Hoop Dreams helmer Steve James.
Film Rites’ Garrett Basch will produce the documentary, with Scorsese and Zaillian executive producing.
The book chronicles the famous film critic’s struggle and recovery from alcoholism; his battle with thyroid cancer that left him unable to eat, drink or speak; his marriage; his politics; and his spiritual beliefs.
The plan is to start shooting as soon as possible. Ebert is in Toronto for the international film festival.
Scorsese and Zaillian last teamed on 2002’s Gangs of New York, which Scorsese directed and Zaillian wrote.
