Roku has sold more than 10 million streaming video devices in the United States, the company announced late Monday night.
That’s an increase of 2 million from early this year, when the company had sold more than 8 million Rokus. But the device still lags behind competitor Apple, which had sold more than 20 million units of Apple TV as of April this year, up from 13 million in May 2013.
Roku, a $99 over-the-top box that gives viewers access to streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu via their television sets, first launched in May 2008. Today the device has more than 1,800 channels and has streamed more than 5 billion hours since its launch.
“We’re thrilled that Roku is recognized for making America’s favorite streaming players,” said CEO Anthony Wood. “Our goal is make TV better for everyone and that single focus guides us to create better ways for consumers to easily and instantly enjoy the best streaming entertainment. With the recent launch of Roku TV, we’re offering even more ways to stream.”
The company, citing a study it commissioned from NPD Group in July, says it aggregates 37 million hours of video streamed per week, compared to 15 million hours on tApple TV, 12 million hours on Google’s Chromecast and six million hours on Amazon’s Fire TV.
