Rola Bauer has been promoted to the position of head of all U.S. TV production and co-production activities at France’s Studiocanal.
Bauer, a veteran TV producer and co-production pioneer, boasts credits including the Emmy-winning miniseries The Pillars of the Earth, pan-European crime drama Crossing Lines and dark dramedy Spotless.
Her Germany-based production outfit Tandem is a prime division of StudioCanal’s international television business.
In her new role, Bauer will be tasked with developing and partnering on scripted formats and co-productions for the U.S. market and exploring synergies with Universal Music Group, which, like StudioCanal, is a subsidiary of French media giant Vivendi.
“Given Rola’s experience and contacts in the U.S., it was a logical decision that she take a more active role on behalf of all of our production and partnership companies’ scripted projects,” StudioCanal CEO Didier Lupfer said in a statement. “Rola’s long-standing relationships and deep understanding of the U.S. market is an asset that StudioCanal values and from which the entire television business unit can benefit.”
Bauer will be responsible for setting up strategic alliances with writing and showrunner talent in the U.S. for StudioCanal’s TV division, while remaining CEO of Tandem. She will report directly to Romain Bessi, COO and head of TV Series at StudioCanal.
“What fun to widen the scope and further mine the co-pro connections for the whole StudioCanal television production family,” said Bauer. “They represent the most talented, innovative producers in Europe with track records of delivering premium-quality series. The merging of top European creatives, StudioCanal’s extensive library and synergizing with the leading global music company, Universal Music Group, presents a wealth of opportunities … tremendous and quite exciting.”
Working with Bauer on building StudioCanal’s U.S. TV operations will be Gina Marcheschi, who joined Tandem Productions as executive vp, development in July 2015 and will be based in StudioCanal’s offices in Los Angeles. Bauer will split her time between StudioCanal’s offices in L.A. and Tandem Productions’ Munich office.
In addition to Tandem, StudioCanal owns acclaimed European TV production houses RED and Guilty Party in the U.K. and Denmark’s SAM Productions.
