ROME — CinemaXXI, the Rome Film Festival’s section focusing on trends in filmmaking, released its full lineup Wednesday, with a cosmopolitan competition slate heavy on world premieres.
The festival also released its full jury for CinemaXXI, which will feature Indian filmmaker Ashim Ahluwala, Italy’s Yuri Ancarani, Laila Pakalnina of Latvia and Brazil-based director and screenwriter Michael Wahrmann. Festival officials previously announced the jury would be headed by U.S. director Larry Clark, whose 2012 drama Marfa Girl won Rome’s top prize a year ago.
The lineup is the last major announcement about the program for the eight-year-old festival, which runs from Nov. 8 to 17. The lineup for the main competition and other selections had been announced over the last two weeks, with several details released in one-off announcements before that.
A total of ten countries have production or co-production credits among the 15 feature-length films — 13 of them world premieres — in the CinemaXXI competition, including four from France and three from Italy. Among the highlights: the European premiere of Alexandre Rockwell‘s Little Feet, The New Testament of Jesus Christ According to John (O novo testament de Jesus Cristo Seundo João) from Portugal’s Joaquim Pinto and Nuno Leonel, and Atlas, a documentary from France’s Antoine d’Agata.
All told, the competition lineup for full-length films includes eight documentaries and seven feature films.
The festival previously announced that L’amminstratore from Italy’s Vincenzo Marra — the sidebar’s opening film — and Fear of Falling, from Oscar winning director Jonathan Demme and written by Wallace Shawn would screen in the CinemaXXI section, though it wasn’t revealed until Wednesday that Fear of Falling would be in the section’s competition lineup.
The festival also announced its 20-film lineup of short- and medium-length films in competition, as well as a slate of out-of-competition selections including The Chimney (Skurstenis) from jury member Pakalnina, I Am Door by Door (Om Dar ba Dar), the restored version of the acclaimed 1988 film from India’s Kamal Swaroop and the previously announced The Seventh Walk (Saatvin Sair) from Amit Dutta, the sidebar’s closing film.
The program also includes seven out-of-competition short- and medium-length films. Two other films — Glaucocamaleo from Italy’s Luca Trevisani and Twenty-One-Twelve The Day the World Didn’t End from Marco Martins and Michelangelo Pistoletto — will screen in the section in collaboration with the MAXXI Museum, Italy’s museum of 21st Century arts that hosts the CinemaXXI section.
