Renowned hairdresser Danilo (his fans include Gwen Stefani and Lady Gaga) chopped off Rooney Mara‘s long wavy light brown hair for her role as the punk rock computer hacker Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher‘s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. She even got her nipple pierced for authenticity. And judging from her recent carpet appearances to promote the film, it doesn’t look like Rooney is ready to grow her hair out yet or go back to her natural color.

Rooney wore Salandaresque black blunt bangs at the London premiere, also sporting an edgy Givenchy couture white cut-out gown that — if the fictional Salander had to wear a gown — she might actually like. Mara also wore another cutting edge creation by London designer Roksanda Ilincic — a black pantsuit with midriff cut-outs — at the Sweden premiere. This is definitely Ilincic’s peak red carpet moment but her fashion fans also include Gwyneth Paltrow, Thandie Newton, Cate Blanchett, Cristina Ricci, Kate Hudson and Rosamund Pike.

Mara admits that Salander’s style has strongly impacted the way she dresses in real life and she’s since invested in new clothes to go with her altered appearance. And costume designer, Trish Summerville, told THR that Mara gave the initial thumbs on the Tattoo capsule collection for H&M and she was thrilled to be given the entire collection to wear. “I used to wear a lot of girlie, frilly things,” Mara says. “Now I buy things that are more comfortable, and more utilitarian, and sort of boyish.”
Mara also told Britain’s Style magazine, “My wardrobe has completely changed. It had to, partly because of my hair and partly because I stopped feeling comfortable in what I used to wear. I don’t feel comfy in those clothes anymore because I have been living as Lisbeth for 14 months.”
We gotta wonder. Is the Salander style that hard to shake? Some sources whisper that there may be another Fincher adaptation of the second or third novels in the Stieg Larsson Millennium Trilogy. And if Dragon Tattoo is a big hit when it opens on Dec. 20, that would certainly make dollars and sense.
