During her appearance, Perez and Today co-host Matt Lauer compared experiences with the curmudgeonly writer-actor behind Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Lauer shared a clip of his interview with David, which he said will air on Today next week. In the video, before Lauer even says anything, David jumps in: “This is why I hate stuff like this. You’ll see how much I’m going to hate this. Go ahead.” That’s followed by a bit more playful bickering about what attitude David should have.
Perez laughed at the video, revealing that she’s “fallen in love” with her co-star, who also wrote the play.
“He’s odd, he’s weird, he’s crotchety, he’s all those things and I love him,” she said. In fact, her experience working with him has made her understand what Jennifer Lawrence told Vanity Fair about being attracted to him.
“Sorry, Larry, but when I first heard that I was like, ‘Are you kidding? Really? Come on, have you seen the man?’ And then now that I’m working with him I’m getting those same sensations that Jennifer Lawrence is having,” Perez said. “You get it because he’s a man who knows who he is, and that’s powerful and that’s attractive and he’s funny and he’s intelligent. And he’s also, I know he’s going to hate me saying this, he’s a teddy bear. He’s sweet and he’s kind and he’s generous and he doesn’t want anyone to know that though.”
Meanwhile, everyone Perez has ever known is hitting her up for tickets to the nearly sold-out Broadway show, which hasn’t even officially opened yet.
“I have friends calling me that I haven’t heard from in 20 years, emails off the hook, texts off the hook, phones off the hook. People are ringing my doorbell. It’s disgusting,” she said. “Al Roker asked me for a ticket. I said, ‘I can’t help you, guy.’ “
Perez also talked about reports that she was leaving The View, which surfaced while she was temporarily off the show while she was rehearsing, saying “I don’t know where the heck that came from. I was just in rehearsal and I heard that and I was like, ‘news to me.’ “
She noted that the show is looking for a replacement for former co-host Rosie O’Donnell who left a couple of weeks ago, but said, “Everything is fine. … We’re having a really good time and this energy between Nicolle [Wallace] and Whoopi [Goldberg] and I is really, really good.”
