ODESSA, Ukraine – Broken, by British director Rufus Norris, was announced the winner of the Grand Prix of the Odessa International Film Festival at the closing ceremony held at the city’s Opera Theater on July 21.
The Golden Duke statuette and a $15,000 cash prize were awarded based on the audience vote.
The international competition jury of the festival, held in the Ukrainian port city for the third time this year, awarded the German/Russian/Latvian/Dutch/Belarusian co-production V Tumane (In the Fog), directed by Sergei Loznitsa, as the competition’s best film.
France’s Benoît Delépine and Gustave de Kervern were awarded as the best directors for Le Grand Soir (The Big Night).
The cast of the teenage drama Dollhouse, by Irish director Kirsten Sheridan, was given the award for best actors.
The jury also extended special mentions to the Ukrainian movie Obychnoye Delo (Regular Thing), directed by Valentin Vasyanovich, “for a step towards the rebirth of Ukrainian cinema” and to the Romanian/Dutch film Toata lumea din familia noastra (Everybody in Our Family), by Radu Jude, “for the freedom of style and a powerful story about everyday life in contemporary Romania”.
Chempiony Iz Podvorotni (Backstreet Champions)by Akhtem Seytablayev was announced the best film in the Ukrainian national competition.
