Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld was all about girl power at the Sept. 30 show in Paris. When the fashion crowd including Alexa Chung, Leigh Lezark and Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin (who sat with Anna Wintour), arrived at the Grand Palais, the indoor venue had been transformed into a charming outdoor Parisian boulevard, but not just any one — “Boulevard Chanel.”
The show kicked off sans music with models walking in pairs or trios down the Boulevard catwalk in tweedy suits with colorful pops. Statement-making accessories including portable quilted speakers, crystal-encrusted whistle necklaces, army green messenger bags (with peace signs and sparkly “Votez Coco” pins) and cross-body chain strap bags emblazoned with “Make Fashion Not War.”
As the show and soundtrack amped up, Gisele Bundchen strutted solo in a camel-and-white striped long cardigan with matching boots (to cheers from the audience).
The collection also featured bold tweed trousers, pinstripes, signature black-and-white motifs, and cheery abstract-patterned flat boots.
For the grand finale, the entire troupe of models (along with Lagerfeld) marched down the runway carrying signs that read “Ladies First” and “History Is Her Story” as Whitney Houston‘s female empowerment anthem “I’m Every Woman” blasted. More than a few Chanel heels were tapping in the audience — Kendall Jenner was snapped leaving after the show with her “Ladies First” sign in hand. You go, girl!
