Rupert Murdoch‘s News Corp. is in advanced talks to hire Gerson Zweifach, a partner with the Washington law firm of Williams & Connolly, as its new general counsel, the Wall Street Journal reported.
It said that his appointment could be announced in January.
A new general counsel is likely to become a key player in News Corp.’s handling of the phone hacking scandal, the paper, which is part of News Corp., said. Williams & Connolly was part of a legal team that News Corp. hired over the summer amid mounting allegations in the phone hacking case.
In a career spanning more than 29 years at Williams & Connolly, Zweifach has worked on antitrust, securities, libel and commercial cases.
Long-time general counsel Lawrence Jacobs left in June to pursue other opportunities. On an interim basis, Janet Nova, a board member of the conglomerate’s News International newspaper unit, has taken on the general counsel duties.
A spokesman for News Corp. and Williams & Connolly representatives declined to comment or couldn’t be reached, Bloomberg News reported.
