A moment in rock history will come to comic book life this fall, with the release of The Making of A Farewell to Kings: The Graphic Novel, based on the recording of Canadian prog-rock band Rush’s classic 1977 album, which includes such beloved tracks as “Xanadu,” “Cinderella Man” and “Closer to the Heart.”
“We worked incredibly hard to create a graphic novel that celebrates the music of Rush, and the creation of the album of A Farewell to Kings as a work of art,” co-writer and Fantoons creative director David Calcano said in a statement. “We think this book will be something for comics and music fans alike to cherish.”
Calcano worked with Lindsay Lee to write the graphic novel, with additional input from Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson and A Farewell to Kings producer Terry Brown, who also provides the foreword to the book. Artwork comes from Juan Riera and Ittai Manero.
The project is just the latest in a partnership between the iconic band and the Los Angeles-based publisher, which stretches back to 2015’s RUSHToons by Fantoons Vol. 2112. Later this year, the publisher will release an official Rush coloring book, with 70 illustrations inspired by the group’s career and releases to date.
Rush is just one client of Fantoons, which creates both book and animated projects for brands including Disney Channel, Penguin Random House and CBS, as well as performers such as Steve Martin, Poison and Rob Zombie.
The Making of A Farewell to Kings: The Graphic Novel is set to be released Sept. 10. Read on for a preview, below.
