Roskino, Russia’s agency for international film promotion, is launching a co-production grant at the Venice International Film Festival next month in a bid to facilitate co-production between Russia and other countries.
“Today, when the government is nearly the only source of funding for the Russian film industry, international film markets at major festivals present an alternative opportunity for finding partners,” said Yekaterina Mtsituridze, Roskino’s general director, in a press release.
Eight projects in preproduction stages have been selected to compete for the grant, which is to be used for the winning project’s development. Only feature films with at least 30 percent of confirmed funding were eligible.
The winning project will have to have the highest commercial and festival potential, and the decision is to be made by an expert commission featuring international industry professionals, producers, distributors and festival selectors, Roskino said.
According to Mtsituridze, the selected projects are set to benefit from being presented at a major international film event regardless of which one wins.
The list of selected projects includes an adaptation of Polish author Janusz Wisniewski‘s novel S@motnosc w Sieci (Loneliness on the Web) and Matryoshka, based on Vladimir Sorokin‘s book Norma.
