A feature based on a novel by hardline culture minister Vladimir Medinsky is to be made in Russia, becoming the first movie in the country’s recent history made from a book by a high placed official still in office.
Shooting of the movie Stena (The Wall), set in 17th century Russia, is scheduled to take place this coming summer in the Northwestern region of Pskov, the local news agency Pskov Information Service reported. The movie is to be directed by Dmitry Meskhiyev.
The Wall is Medinsky’s first novel, which follows several of his nonfiction books. The publisher, Olma Media Group, announced the book as “Russian Umberto Eco and, to some extent, our Orthodox Christian Dan Brown.”
As culture minister, Medinsky is known for anti-Western attitudes and making historical and “patriotic” films the ministry’s main funding priority.
Meskhiyev, who directed 15 features and TV series, currently heads the theater and concert directorate in Pskov.
