Russian distributor Paradiz has picked up the local film Pod Elektricheskimi Oblakami (Under Electric Clouds), which won the best camera award at Berlinale, and will release it mid-May.
The deal was announced at the Russian International Film Market, which opened in Moscow on Tuesday.
“We are not aiming at a wide release,” Gevorg Nersisyan, Paradiz’s general director, was quoted as saying by the Russian trade journal ProfiCinema. “However, we hope that the film will be successful with certain groups of viewers.”
According to Nersisyan, Under Electric Clouds, an episodic epic of 21st-century Russia, co-produced with Ukraine and Poland, is to be released on roughly 150 screens May 14.
Directed by Alexei German Jr., Under Electric Clouds was part of the official selection at the Berlin International Film Festival last month, and its DOPs Sergei Mikhalchuk and Yevgeny Privin collected the best photography Silver Bear.
The release date was deliberately chosen to coincide with the opening of Marche du Film at Cannes, Nersisyan said, adding that news about international deals could give the film a boost at home.
“The first deals were concluded at the European Film Market, but negotiations with some territories are still in progress, and new information is to be released in Cannes,” he said.
