In response to Facebook’s announcement that it will release to congressional investigators the contents of ads bought by a Russian agency, the Russian government has emphatically denied any involvement in those posts.
“We don’t know who and how placed ads on Facebook,” Dmitry Peskov, Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, was quoted as saying by state-run news agency RIA Novosti. “We have never done that; the Russian side has never had anything to do with it.”
“We don’t know what Russiagate is,” he added.
According to prominent Russian legislator Konstantin Kosachev, there are ulterior motives behind Facebook’s decision to provide the contents of the ads to the investigators.
“Apparently, [Mark] Zuckerberg is doing it to try to mend his soured relations with U.S. authorities,” Kosachev was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.
Earlier this month, Facebook said that about $100,000 was spent on ads leading to fake accounts probably run from Russia during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign.
There were unconfirmed reports saying that those ads were placed by the so-called “troll factory,” funded by the Kremlin and aiming to meddle with the U.S. 2016 presidential election.
