Like many Met Gala makeup artists, Talia Sparrow tried not to take the evening’s “China: Through the Looking Glass” theme too literally. “I was inspired by Ruth Wilson’s dress — I wanted the decadence of the event’s theme to shine through in a more artistic way,” she tells Pret-a-Reporter.
To that end, Sparrow made up The Affair actress’ eyes to resemble jewels, keeping her skin fresh and lips muted. “Her eyes are stunning — a piercing blue color. So I wanted to make them pop. It’s a different type of look than she usually wears.”

To create the look, she began with a thin layer of Laura Mercier Creme Eye Liner in Indigo ($23) on the top lash line, to play off the purple hues in Wilson’s Oscar de la Renta dress. Next came Laura Mercier Baked Eye Colour in Hot Chocolate ($25), which she blended from the outer corners to the inner corners of the actress’ bottom lash line. Then Sparrow dusted on Laura Mercier Baked Eye Colour in Ballet Pink to create a sparkling, jewel-like effect.
The last step was a coating of Laura Mercier Extra Lash Sculpting Mascara in Black Onyx ($25), for drama, and a slick of “subdued” Laura Mercier Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour in Petal Pink and Nude Rose ($28).
