Singer and former Disney Channel star Sabrina Carpenter will star in Work It, a dance-themed comedy from STXfilms and Alloy Entertainment.
Liza Koshy and Keiynan Lonsdale will co-star in the project, which is being produced by Alicia Keys as well as Elysa Koplovitz Dutton and Leslie Morgenstein from Alloy Entertainment.
Laura Terruso (Good Girls Get High) is on board to direct the coming-of-age comedy that centers on an awkward teen (Carpenter) who, after being rejected from her high school’s dance team, assembles a crew of bold and fearless misfits to compete against them in a national dance championship.
Terruso will also make a pass on the script, working off an original screenplay written by Alison Peck, who worked on STX’s upcoming Uglydolls.
STXinternational will handle international distribution and directly distribute in the U.K. and Ireland. STXfilms’ Kate Vorhoff and Catherine Hagedorn will oversee production on behalf of the studio.
Carpenter appeared in Disney’s Girl Meets World and starred in the channel’s update of Adventures in Babysitting. She is coming off the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of Short History of the Long Road. Her latest album, Singular: Act 2, will be released this summer.
Carpenter is repped by Paradigm, Foundation Media Partners, Faculty, Shemarya and SGSBC.
