Bell, referencing this year’s awards contenders such as I, Tonya and Lady Bird in her opening monologue, called for more inclusion for women onscreen. “The skating queen, the grieving mother, the Lady Bird, even the sea monster — everyone’s story deserves to be told, especially now,” she said.
The host noted that the ceremony isn’t just for all of the successful actors seated in the room, but for all of the aspiring actors “who have just gone on their 20th fruitless commercial audition, who are watching this in a studio apartment in Koreatown with their five roommates downing their nightly dinner of canned tuna.”
Bell pleaded, “As we march forward with active momentum and open ears, let’s make sure that we’re leading the charge with empathy and with diligence, because fear and anger never win the race.”
She ended her monologue with a playful Frozen plug: “Regardless of our differences, I think we can all come together and delight in one thing — Frozen 2 is coming out in theaters in 2019.”
Bell previously revealed during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that her only focus for her hosting duties would be to “bring joy” in light of the sexual harassment scandals plaguing Hollywood. SAG Awards executive producer Kathy Connell also pegged this year’s show as a celebration of “the year of the woman.”
In addition to Bell serving as the show’s host, the awards also featured a lineup of all-female presenters — including Halle Berry, Lupita Nyong’o and Emma Stone — and a female-driven version of the traditional “I am an actor” segment.
The 24th annual SAG Awards, simulcast live on TNT and TBS, took place at the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles.
