Back in 2012, the fashion community was concerned after Saint Laurent dropped its “Yves,” went through a drastic rebranding and began offering “basic” leather jackets, plain moto boots and standard razor-sharp blazers that left fashion critics scratching their heads.
But now — as fashion and beauty seem to have comfortably moved into the simplicity-with-edge movement that the brand helped kick off, and with the likes of Angelina Jolie, Margot Robbie and Joni Mitchell serving as company VIPs — Saint Laurent is on fire, both in perception and reality (parent company Kering announced that brand sales have doubled since 2012, when former Dior Homme designer Hedi Slimane took the company’s creative reins).
And Monday night in Paris, Slimane’s fall 2015 show — aptly titled “Pretty Boy” — was the hottest ticket in town.
A levitating, mirrored catwalk was surrounded by front-row celebs such as Jessica Chastain (who attended with her stylist Elizabeth Stewart), Salma Hayek (the wife of Kering head Francois-Henri Pinault), famed designers Alber Elbaz and Azzedine Alaia, as well as Yves Saint Laurent’s longtime partner Pierre Berge and his muse, Betty Catroux. And because no Paris Fashion Week show is complete without the city’s cool kid set in attendance, Lou Doillon, French singer Lou Lesage and Paris interiors “it girl” Sarah Lavoine also were in tow.
The clothes, while not considerably different from Slimane’s usual offering of punky party dresses, said razor-sharp blazers, motorcycle jackets and sequined cocktail dresses (except this time with a decidedly early- ‘80s spin), will definitely appease Saint Laurent shoppers.
But what stood out long after we left Paris’ Le Carreau du Temple on Monday night was the show music — a song fittingly called “Pretty Boy” by hipper-than-thou Copenhagen-based pop/punk girl group The Felines. Saint Laurent is known for melding music and fashion with rock-inspired collections and musician-fronted campaigns (see the above Joni Mitchell reference), so the about-to-blow-up headliner made perfect sense.
Known predominantly in Europe and Scandinavia, the band has a Runaways-esque sound that perfectly embodies Slimane’s fall 2015 vibe, right down to the shaggy haircuts his models sported on the catwalk. One could have sworn that the trio were at the end of the catwalk doing their thing, but as it turns out they re-recorded their 2013 song in Paris last week especially for the show.
Watch and listen to the song below. And use it as your getting-ready inspiration next time you, too, want to feel like a pretty, punky girl who uses a masculine touch to bring out her true femininity.
