The world only has another 22 days to wait until Fifty Shades of Grey hits theaters, but for director Sam Taylor-Johnson, that date can’t come quick enough, as she admitted she was “literally” going out of her mind finishing the film.
Taylor-Johnson told Red Magazine, interview extracts of which appeared in The Daily Telegraph, that her mind had been turned to “blancmange” trying to get the final cut right. “I have seen this film over a thousand times, and I’m now in a blancmange,” she said, adding: “But the nuances within — the tiniest shift, look, blink of an eye — can make all the difference and flip it into the wrong territory. It’s like walking on a knife edge.”
The director of the critically acclaimed Nowhere Boy (where she met her husband, Aaron Taylor-Johnson) spoke of the intensity of working on Fifty Shades. “The moment I stepped out of the meeting, I stepped onto one of those bullet trains.”
She continued: “The doors closed, and I couldn’t get off. The speed, the velocity, was unbelievable. I need to get off and breathe and think about something else.”
Taylor-Johnson also reassured fans of EL James’ global best-sellers that she stayed true to the books and outlined the very involved research that she and the cast put into the role, something star Jamie Dornan, who plays Christian Grey, has alluded to in previous interviews.
“I’ve practically eaten it. I have read it over and over,” she said. “Jamie and I had to sit and meet various dominants and dominatrices just to make sure we understood that world so that we in no way portrayed it incorrectly.”
Fifty Shades of Grey hits theaters on Feb. 13.
