“Thanks to Mary Tyler Moore, the reason a little Sam Bee could ever think I could do something like this,” said Bee. “We are going to make it after all.” She and the ladies onstage then threw their pink pussyhats in the air in honor of Moore, mimicking her signature hat toss at the end of The Mary Tyler Moore Show theme song.
It was Bee’s first show since Trump’s inauguration and she had a lot to say about the president, but her most positive experience was the Women’s March.
“Going to the Women’s March was like waking up from a nightmare to find out the monster was real but all of your friends were there with sticks and torches and unflattering hats to beat back the darkness,” Bee said.
“If only we’d known sooner that all you have to do to get white women to show up to a protest is to give them a craft,” Bee joked. She made fun of the news anchors who claimed they “didn’t understand” why people were marching and falsely said the marches were only on the liberal coasts.
Bee also dedicated a segment to making fun of Trump’s inauguration and in particular, his inaugural concert with Three Doors Down. “I felt a kinship with the Trump family and their palpable heartfelt boredom with Three Doors Down,” Bee said, showing a photo of the Trump family looking expressionless behind security glass. “That glass is to keep them from escaping.”
One of Bee’s segments focused on her sad and downtrodden team interviewing happy Trump supporters on Inauguration Day. There was gloating, talk of snowflakes and Titanic boat references. Watch below.
