Courtesy of San Sebastian International Film FestivalTerence Davies (The Big Blue Sea, Time and the City), Mamoru Hosoda and Ben Wheatley (Sightseers, A Field in England) will compete for the Golden Shell at the 63rd San Sebastian International Film Festival, organizers announced Friday as they unveiled eight new titles in the Official Selection.
Davies returns to Spain’s A-level festival with Sunset Song, an intimate tale set at the start of World War I adapted from a Scottish novel by Lewis Grassic Gibbon, while Japan’s anime master Hosoda brings The Boy and the Beast about a boy who crosses the border into the imaginary world and befriends a supernatural creature who becomes his spiritual guide and adventure partner.
Wheatley’s High Rise is based on J.G. Ballard’s novel and stars Jeremy Irons and Sienna Miller. The action-drama focuses on a doctor seeking anonymity sucked into the dynamics of his apartment complex.
After winning the New Directors award in 2004 with Innocence, Lucile Hadzihalilovic returns to San Sebastian with her new film, Evolution. On a remote island inhabited solely by women and young boys, Nicolas and the other boys are subjected to mysterious and sinister medical treatments.
French directors Jean-Marie and Arnaud Larrieu bring their new film 21 Nights with Pattie, about a woman who cuts short her vacation to organize her mother’s funeral, while Philippe Lesage will compete with The Demons, Runar Runarsson with Sparrows and Levan Tutberidze with Moira.
These titles join the Spanish titles previously announced to compete for the festival’s top honor. San Sebastian runs Sept. 18-26 in Spain’s northern Basque region.
