Paramount is behind the adaptation, which will be produced by Mark Waters and Jessica Tuchinsky via their Watermark Pictures banner.
Paramount picked up the book rights back in 2005 and even had a script by Josh Schwartz, who was also going to direct. The script even made the prestigious Black List. But the project languished as the studio, like most others, focused on tentpoles and fare that was easier to sell.

But with Fox’s adaptation of Fault in Our Stars a bona fide hit and one of the most profitable movies of the year, there is now renewed interest in the book.
Inspired by Green’s own school experiences, the book tells of a boy who enters a boarding school in which social classes engage in pranks on one another. Alaska is a female student whom all the boys find beguiling but who is also dangerously reckless.
Polley is the Canadian filmmaker behind such acclaimed personal films as Away From Her and Take This Waltz. She last made Stories We Tell, the award-winning documentary about her search for the truth behind her family.
She will write the script for Alaska. The directing question will be decided later.
