There’s a reason Saturday Night Live viewers have been seeing less of castmember Pete Davidson.
“I know I’ve kinda been missing, on social media and on the show,” the comedian said Monday. “I quit drugs and am happy and sober for the first time in eight years.”
The 23-year-old SNL star took to Instagram to pen a message to his fans, telling them, “I’m okay.”
Davidson became the youngest member on the current NBC cast when he joined Lorne Michaels’ veteran sketch series in the summer of 2014 at age 20. He quickly became a breakout star after making his debut on the 40th season’s premiere that September.
“When I brought in Pete [Davidson] and Leslie [Jones], we already had a full cast. But they both had an impact right away,” Michaels told THR of the casting decision. “And I think that’s what happens. You’re just trying to in some way always improve the show in the off-season.”
Davidson, whose father died in 9/11, has been open about his drug use and dependency on medical marijuana to treat his Crohn’s disease, which he was diagnosed with in his late teens.
“I found that the things the doctors were prescribing me, and seeing all these doctors and trying new things, weed was the only thing that would help me eat,” he told High Times in 2016. “I wouldn’t be able to perform on SNL if I couldn’t smoke weed. I wouldn’t be able to do anything, really.”
In his Instagram post Monday, he encouraged others not to give up.
“It wasn’t easy, but I got a great girl, great friends and I consider myself a lucky man,” he said of his journey to sobriety. “Remember to never give up hope because sometimes that’s all we got. We are a family and I appreciate all your love and support. It’s nice to be back in action.”
He also posted a photo with his girlfriend, followed by a post from an SNL sketch. His account otherwise had been cleared.
Just wanted to let you guys know I’m okay. I know I’ve kinda been missing, on social media and on the show. I quit drugs and am happy and sober for the first time in 8 years. It wasn’t easy, but I got a great girl, great friends and I consider myself a lucky man. I’ll always be here for you guys, I promise. Remember to never give up hope because sometimes that’s all we got. We are a family and I appreciate all your love and support. It’s nice to be back in action
