New mom and resident Hollywood bombshell Scarlett Johansson made quite a statement with her Oscar hairstyle. It shouldn’t work — particularly on such a major red carpet — but it totally does.

With the entire underneath shaved and the top left long, sleek and blonde, the hair was whipped back and slicked into a frozen waterfall-esque shape that seemed a bit severe but still felt elegant and Oscar-appropriate.
It’s an edgy alternative to the pixie and, of course, the ubiquitous chignon and is bound to inspire more starlets to do an underneath shave in a classy and modern way. (Rosamund Pike already has the hair near the nape of her neck buzzed down.)
