The Church of Scientology has created a Twitter account to respond to Alex Gibney‘s documentary, Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief.
The account, called Freedom Media Ethics has thus far published two tweets:
— Freedom Media Ethics (@FreedomEthics) January 17, 2015
— Freedom Media Ethics (@FreedomEthics) January 26, 2015
The account links to a website featuring a statement from the Church of Scientology responding to the HBO documentary.
“The Church has documented evidence that those featured in Gibney’s film regurgitating their stale, discredited allegations are admitted perjurers, admitted liars and professional anti-Scientologists whose living depends on the filing of false claims,” reads the statement.
“To this day, neither HBO nor Gibney can deny that they have yet to present the Church with a single allegation from the film so the Church may have an opportunity to respond. The Church never sought special treatment, only fair treatment,” writes the Church of Scientology. “That Gibney, co-producer Lawrence Wright and HBO have intentionally covered up relevant facts discrediting their sources speaks volumes about their bigoted agendas and the bias they hold toward people of any faith that doesn’t carry their stamp of approval.”
The Scientology Twitter account posted a picture of the New York Times ad the Church of Scientology ran denouncing the film. “Is Alex Gibney’s Upcoming HBO ‘Documentary’ a Rolling Stone/UVA Redux?” reads the headline, referencing the recent controversy surrounding Rolling Stone‘s article about University of Virginia campus rape.
Gibney’s film is based on Lawrence Wright’s 2013 book. It focuses on the power of Scientology and how the religion is tied to Hollywood, particularly through high-profile members Tom Cruise and John Travolta. Going Clear premiered at Sundance and is set to air March 16 on HBO.
